We are witnessing a troubling trend: the political erasure of biological sex categories from our laws, language, and public policy.

We’re proud to introduce our latest paper, “The Erosion of Sex-Based Language in Irish Legislation and Public Discourse.” This insightful analysis uncovers how gender ideology is reshaping the language of policy and law, and the profound impact this has on women.

This comprehensive paper serves as a deep dive into what is known as Policy Capture, responding directly to the many questions we heard during the referendum: “Why are they doing this?” The Irish people decisively rejected the proposal to remove Article 41.2 from the Constitution, recognising it for what it was—a cynical attempt to erase the identities of women and mothers. Now, we’re revealing how we arrived at a point where our elected officials seem to be working against us.

We are witnessing a troubling trend: the political erasure of biological sex categories from our laws, language, and public policy. This shift is also reflected in mainstream media, where terms like “woman” and “mother” are increasingly replaced by the vague constructs of “gender identity” and gender-neutral phrases such as “people,” “pregnant people,” and “people with a cervix.”

The denial of sex carries serious repercussions for the safeguarding of women and girls. If we cannot name women and girls, we cannot protect them, nor can we secure equal human rights. Our rights to single-sex spaces, fair sports competitions, bodily integrity, and appropriate healthcare are all under threat from the rise of gender ideology.

This paper investigates the motivations behind the shift from sex-based language to gender identity language. It examines the tensions between the Gender Recognition Act of 2015 and the Equality Acts, highlighting the amendments that have introduced gender-neutral terms into our laws. It also scrutinises how Irish law and international human rights standards were overlooked during these changes.

Furthermore, we address the role of activist NGOs, who are financially incentivised to promote government policies and exert undue influence over politicians. This has led to policy capture at the highest levels of government and public institutions, including academia, creating an echo chamber that undermines the best interests of society, especially for women, children, and the LGB community.

We invite you to read this critical paper and engage in this vital conversation about the future of language, rights, and protections for all.
