INDEPENDENT TCD SEANAD CANDIDATE

Look at what I have achieved outside the chamber over the last five years, imagine what I could achieve inside the chamber as your TCD Senator.

PUTTING KNOWLEDGE TO ACTION
MY RECORD
I never intended to become an activist but I felt forced to take action. I could see how legislation meant to protect one group would, in fact, harm the protective rights of others; namely women and children. A brand-new political movement was born! Since founding a human rights and advocacy organisation The Countess in 2019, I have dedicated myself to protecting the rights of women, children and families in Ireland.
For five years, the organisation that I founded has provided a framework for a conversation that is reasoned, measured and robust - underpinned by compassion. We’ve engaged in rigorous research and disciplined advocacy, earning the honour of presenting to the United Nations as subject matter experts.

CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS
In the recent Referendum, I led a grassroots campaign that connected with the concerns of ordinary people and helped bring about a resounding rejection of proposed constitutional amendments; amendments that would have stripped mothers of constitutional protections and rights and that would have collapsed the legal meaning of family and marriage.

LEGISLATIVE REFORMS
We fought the law and mná won!
I successfully campaigned to stop the Government from removing the word ‘woman’ from maternity legislation. Women from across the country, young and old, across the political spectrum, took part in our 'These Words Belong To Us' campaign that was heard and seen by thousands.

PRISON REFORMS
I have drafted legislation that has been introduced in the Dáil - the only legislation of its kind in the world - to close the loophole whereby males who identify as women are placed in female prisons, as is the current policy in this country.

HATE CRIME BILL
I campaigned actively against different iterations of the poorly drafted hate crime bill since 2020. We must have open dialogue and debate without one side being shut down, labelled or criminalised. This legislation poses a threat to freedom of speech and equality before the law.

Founded a Human Rights & Advocacy Group called The Countess.
Presentations at the United Nations to speak about the erosion of women's rights and single sex spaces.
Years since called to The Bar and working in the Irish justice system.
Successful legislative amendments & submissions to the Dáil, defending the rights of women and child safeguarding.

SOME HIGHLIGHTS
PRISON RULES REVIEW CONSULTATION SUBMISSION
It came to our attention that the Irish Prison Service (IPS) is a member of the LGBTI+ National Inclusion Strategy Committee. This committee reviews the implementation of the actions contained in the National LGBTI+ Inclusion Strategy. One of the key recommendations in the Strategy is to amend both the Equal Status Act and the Employment Equality Act to “explicitly include the ground of gender identity”.
