INDEPENDENT TCD SEANAD CANDIDATE

I am incredibly proud of what my organisation, The Countess, has achieved in the last five years but my work doesn't just stop there.

REAL ISSUES. REAL SOLUTIONS. REAL RESULTS.
MY PRIORITIES
I‘m deeply concerned about the many failures of our successive governments to deliver adequate child protection and support services. My experience as a journalist in the UK covering child trafficking from residential care homes opened my eyes to the complex dangers faced by vulnerable children.

TRAINING & RESOURCES
We urgently need a centralised database for missing children, children at risk or harmed while under State care. All frontline Gardaí and Tusla staff must be trained to recognise signs of child sexual exploitation.

Spotlight on...
EDUCATION CURRICULUM
Redraft the RSE SPHE curriculum to reflect a more balanced and nuanced approach to gender and sexuality. The rights and concerns of parents must not be ignored.

Spotlight on...
DISABILITIES SERVICES
No child should "age out" of early interventions or face years of delays for critical surgeries. Decades of our Government’s inaction and neglect of our most vulnerable is unacceptable.

CRIMES OF SEXUAL ABUSE
Reform the policy of fully suspended sentences for possession of child abuse images and convictions. Review the use of the subjective test* as a defence in cases of rape** or threats to rape in line with law reform commission recommendations.
*“An honest, though unreasonable, mistake that the woman was consenting is a defence to rape. Any such alleged belief in consent must be genuinely held.” **The People (DPP) v C O’R [2016] IESC 64, [2016] 3 IR 322 at para. 57.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Domestic violence is currently not a criminal offence; it is a common law offence only. We must overhaul outdated and piecemeal legislation, and reform the policy of fully suspended sentences for domestic violence convictions.

FUNDING & REINVESTMENT
Designate a set percentage of Corporation Tax from the unexpected Apple windfall to bridge the shortfall in Third Level Education. Ireland saw significant cuts to higher education funding after the 2008 financial crisis, never returning to the pre crisis peak. TCD has been key to attracting multinationals and FDI so reinvestment is crucial to remain competitive internationally.
